Pastel, like many other dry media, consists of powdered pigments and a binder to keep them together until used. Soft pastels are the most common types out there for their generally higher pigments-to-binder ratio, which lends itself very well to multiple techniques such as blending and smudging. However, due to that, it tends to be rather dusty, and a fixative is required to keep the work permanent.
